Protecting your home from freezing temperatures

Freezing temperatures can damage your home if you’re not prepared, but a few simple steps can keep your property safe and warm all winter. Start by insulating exposed pipes, especially in attics, crawl spaces, and exterior walls, to reduce the risk of freezing and bursting. Disconnect outdoor hoses and cover exterior faucets to prevent ice from forming.

Inside your home, keep the thermostat set to at least 55–65 degrees—even at night or when you’re away. Allow a slow drip from faucets to keep water moving, and open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can reach the pipes. Seal drafts around doors, windows, and where pipes enter the home to stop cold air leaks. Close garage doors and use heavy curtains or blinds to retain indoor heat.

Don’t forget to locate your main water shut-off valve in case a pipe bursts, and stock up on winter essentials like batteries, flashlights, and blankets in case of power outages. Proactive winterizing protects your investment and gives peace of mind through Oxford’s colddest nights.
